A suction-dampener observation is useful only when the reader knows which assembly and viewing point were checked. For the optional arrangement described by NOV, record whether the diaphragm could be seen, what was observed and the operating context. A completed record does not establish charge pressure or authorize service work.
Confirm the installed arrangement first
NOV document 25-101131, page 18, describes an optional in-line suction pulsation dampener with two opposing sight glasses used to observe diaphragm position. The source calls for checking the diaphragm operating level daily and keeping the sight glasses clear.
Optional does not mean fitted to every pump. Confirm the installed dampener identity and applicable manual before applying this observation checklist. Do not assume that another manufacturer's assembly uses the same viewing arrangement or instructions.
A record for each viewing point
The following fields are editorial documentation guidance, not added OEM specifications:
- Pump tag, model and serial number; dampener tag or confirmed assembly identification.
- Applicable manual or drawing reference and revision.
- Observation date, time, observer and the operating state reported by authorized personnel.
- Which sight glass was observed, identified consistently by the equipment drawing or a site reference.
- Whether the viewing area and diaphragm were clearly visible, partly obscured or not readable.
- Diaphragm position as actually observed, using the reference points defined in the applicable procedure.
- Any permitted photograph reference and unresolved follow-up action.
Keep entries for the viewing points distinct. If one could not be observed safely, state that limitation rather than copying the other entry. If visibility changes during the observation, record the observation period and what changed. A single photograph does not establish behavior throughout a shift.
Visibility is a finding, not a service result
An obscured view cannot support an assumed diaphragm position. Mark the position unverified and refer the visibility issue through the approved maintenance process. Do not enter “normal” simply because the previous record did so.
Likewise, a readable view does not prove diaphragm integrity, leak tightness or correct charging. When an observation differs from an earlier record, first preserve both records and their operating contexts. Do not infer a failed diaphragm or prescribe an adjustment from a photograph alone.
If maintenance follows, reference the separate work order, actual completion record and authorized disposition. Keep the initial observation unchanged so that the reason for the work remains traceable.
Keep charging and physical work outside this checklist
NOV's same section includes a warning against using a high-pressure air or nitrogen source for charging, and specifies a hand-operated air pump. That warning is not a complete charging procedure. This article provides no charging target, adjustment sequence, diaphragm replacement steps or fastener torque.
Do not connect a pressure source, operate a charging valve, loosen a cover or remove a sight glass based on this record. Any physical work requires authorized personnel following the installed assembly's approved shutdown, isolation, pressure-release verification and safe-access procedures. Refer an unclear observation to the responsible operator or maintenance authority; the checklist does not authorize continued operation or return to service.
The NOV 12-P-160 and NOV 14-P-220 pages provide equipment navigation, not confirmation that a particular dampener is installed or that its parts interchange.

FAQ
Is this suction dampener installed on every NOV Type P pump?
No. The cited source describes an optional arrangement; verify the actual installation.
Can an obscured sight glass be recorded as a normal diaphragm position?
No. Record the visibility limitation and mark the position unverified.
Does a visible diaphragm establish correct charge pressure?
No. This observation record does not verify charging or replace the applicable procedure.
Can this record authorize removing a sight glass?
No. Physical work requires the applicable safety and maintenance procedures and authorized personnel.
